From the petite to the plus size, it’s the new look for the new millennium. It’s not silent, nor is it a revolution. But little by little, small victory by small victory, the Kenyan plus-size modelling industry is gaining traction. Women of a size 12 and over – which is the controversial industry definition of plus-size – are seeking not only to change existing standards of beauty and to educate young women about their bodies, but look good while doing it.
The injection of new innovative plus-size fashion brands into the industry has meant that relevant work for the plus-size model has increased. Plus-size women are making their mark on international covers and on the catwalk as well. The limited exposure of plus-size women in the market often makes it seem like there are only a handful of plus-size models working in the industry. On the contrary, there are a number of plus-size agencies regionally with an even bigger number of curvy models working in Africa’s modelling mecca.
Kenya’s high profile agency for curvy models, Plus Fabulosity, has an established reputation for its fresh approach in providing representation of the highest quality to its plus-size models. Led by Founder/Director, Francisca Mwende, Plus Fabulosity combines experience and dedication to recognize the demand for gorgeous plus models that also represents the trends of the moment within the fashion industry.
Founded in 2013 by Francisca Mwende, she brings a wealth of expertise and business knowledge to the plus-size modelling industry under her brand; having been crowned ‘Miss Malaika’ Parklands UoN 2011/ 2012.
Being the first agency of its kind, Plus Fabulosity is also to extension a modelling agency for any commentary in relation to body image, plus-size models and the plus-size fashion in general. Plus Fabulosity celebrates women and men who are in their plus side of life, their original beauty and work tirelessly to progress a positive impact of the plus size being in the fashion/lifestyle industry.
Speaking in an interview, Francisca Mwende (Founder, Plus Fabulosity Kenya) shared this with us, “I would love for the industry to be an all-size situation —it’s a beautiful world where you don’t have to be a 0 or a 16, but fall in a spectrum. A beautiful woman’s a beautiful woman. I also think the plus size industry is amazing because it’s really opening up peoples’ minds. It shows reality! We are showing a healthy body image and promoting a way of life in which people can see a curvy girl in a magazine. No matter what size you are, you are beautiful and I hope it’s showing young girls growing up that if you aren’t the normal skinny girl on the front of a magazine then you aren’t any less of a person. I can’t help but be excited to be a part of this somewhat “movement” with new designers and established designers allowing their creativity and inspiration to be explored for more curvaceous body types.”
Plus Fabulosity has seen tremendous growth from a consulting agency to recently establishing the start up of a Plus Size Modelling Agency to their branch. Their specialty lies in curvy ladies who have the edge for photographic, commercial, editorial and catwalk purposes with intent for exposure into legitimate corporate advertising & branding solutions in the local, regional and international front.
On the other hand, one of Nairobi’s freelance plus-size models, Liz Wanjiru, had her positive sentiments shared with us in an interview, “ I think the plus-size industry is a force for positivity and I’m excited about its growth and acceptance into mainstream fashion. Being plus-sized does not necessarily mean that you’re unhealthy, for me it’s about being healthy in your mind, being healthy in your body, heart-healthy, having all those things. I celebrate its message for more self-love, higher self-worth, and an open door to a whole new view on what plus-size fashion is. I can’t wait to see what’s in store for all of us and I hope the positive changes keep coming—and spreads into music and film.”
Plus Model Agency is here to celebrate your curves ladies – and they do it in style. Big is most definitely beautiful and bonny is most definitely back in fashion – we should know! For the fashion conscious curvy female, what better way to showcase that gorgeous body, than showing it off for them – Plus Size Modelling is the way to go! Big men are beautiful too – don’t be shy, fashion is for all shapes and sizes – often age is irrelevant.
