Football meets Fashion: The ‘NAIJA’ Collection

Sports fashion can be a tricky business. Designers are restricted to a set of colours and conventional designs but Nike and Nigeria have really hit it out of the park with their latest line of the retro-inspired World Cup collection for the ‘Super Eagles’.

A constant in Nigeria is an endearing love of football and no doubt a testament to its beauty, the ‘NAIJA’ collection has emerged as a fan favorite on account of its swagger, style of play and bold National Team collection that appeal to everyone both from a sporting and fashion point of view.

“With Nigeria, we started to see trends in attitude and energy connecting the athletes to music, fashion and more. They are part of a resoundingly cool culture. Hence, tapping into Nigeria’s vibrancy,” added Dan Farron, Nike Football Design Director. “We built this kit and collection based on the players’ full identities.”

Built around the term ‘Naija’ which represents a future-focused optimism or “new Nigerian”, the NAIJA collection encompasses the attitude and panache of the young Super Eagles; highlighting unique retro designs, prints and fits featuring travel suits, anthem jackets, training apparel, pre-game jerseys, bucket hats, footwear, and kits.

The campaign features some Nigeria National Team players such as Alex Iwobi, Kelechi Iheanacho, and Ndidi Wilfred, as well a handful of creatives of Nigerian heritage such as Wizkid, Grace Ladoja, Not3s, Julie Adenuga, and Yagazie Emezi.

The home kit has eagle wing-inspired black and white sleeves and a green and white torso that features an abstracted feather pattern and “hyper colors that extend a power capable of turning heads on and off the pitch.”

Nigeria’s World Cup kit, according to Nike, sold out exactly a week ago having racked up 3 million pre-orders before its release. And with just a day’s countdown to the football festival, we wish the Super Eagles nothing but luck on their quest to bring the trophy to Mama Africa.
