First it was the First Lady of the United States of America (FLOTUS), Michelle Obama then Solange Knowles and now it’s our very own award-winning Hollywood actress, Lupita!
Leading African fashion label, Maki Oh continues to prove a hit amongst Hollywood’s fashion elites with Lupita Nyong’o joining the impressive list of women who have rocked the brand’s ensembles.
The dress won by the global sensation at her first event was a gorgeous Adire dress designed by Nigerian designer, Amaka Osakwe of Maki Oh. The designer eventually went online to share a picture of Lupita wearing her outfits.
Lupita looked chic and classy in the two looks she’s wore so far; a mix of her signature hand-painted and hand-dyed pieces from the brand’s Autumn/Winter 2015 “Mami Wata” Collection while trending on her ‘homecoming tour’ in the country . One ensemble was a silk satin scarf blouse paired with a silk cotton skirt for a mentorship event to talk about the importance of art; and the 2nd was a silk satin and velvet vest with silk cotton wide leg trousers to spearhead a campaign to end the slaughter of elephants for ivory.
Last year, Amaka’s label, Maki Oh got an invitation from First Lady, Mitchell Obama, to be present at the ‘Celebration of Designs’ held at the White House on October 8. Maki Oh’s designs have also been seen on Veronica Gledhill (former Vogue magazine fashion editor), Lee Lee Sobieski and Arden Wohl.
Maki Oh works mainly with Adire, a locally design material that is traditional to the Egba people of Ogun state.
Amaka Osakwe is a Nigerian-born fashion designer and proprietor of the Maki Oh label that she started in 2010 specializing in women’s wear.
